Crushed Egg Shells for Compost

Crushed eggshells, approximately one a half gallons worth, I dare say my compost pile is going to be so happy!

New garden tub, soon to be filled with weeds, leaves, and other compostable yummies.

Black Gold - Horse Manure

This batch was a little hotter but will be usable come fall, it's heavy with hay and straw which makes me very happy because I don't have to mix leaves into the manure.

Salad Garden

Bird netting now attached to the hoop house portion of the raised bed and just in time for the baby lettuce sprouts that are now breaking through the soil.

Spring Time Rocks!

Will post some pictures tomorrow, but was actually able to spend some time outside today in the gardens, mostly picking up debris, limbs, and the like.  Tomorrow it's supposed to be 62F here and if it's not too windy I will be uncovering the front gardens.  Still lots to do, leaves and branches to be shredded, horse manure needs to be fetched for the compost bins, pots to be cleaned, seeds to be started, but I sure do LOVE spring time!

Basket and Vines

A shot of my compost bin, this old slat basket has been propped on the post for years, this year it had vines growing in and around it.

Horse Manure

We picked up a load of aged horse manure last night to put on the east garden. First we put down a layer of chipped leaves and compost, then a layer of garden lime, then the manure, then another layer of lime. By the time we were done tilling up the remaining sod in the side yard, to make one continious garden space, it was too dark and too late to chip the remaining leaves to put on top of the manure! This is my first year lasanga gardening.

Our Last

The last of the Junk Pile! And Lord Willing and the River Don't Rise it won't rain tonight and it'll be gone tomorrow as well. It's mostly leaves and vines that will be run through the wood chipper and then put into the compost bin, which I have YET to turn this year because it's been too wet all season.

Compost Bin Update

Now finished we've been using the compost and have since added about a half ton of rotted horse manure to the mix. We haven't ever had problems with critters in our compost pile, unless you count two legged critters!

Ok I went and took a picture of the leaf pile because it just looks so cool! John is outside making gates for my compost bins as I write.

I'm too tired to walk out and photograph the leaf pile now, it's been a LONGGGGG day shoveling etc., but here's what it looks like to scale of the truck. Tomorrow, if it's dry enough, we will shred it and incorporate it into the compost pile. Rumor has it it's going to rain here again. John and I moved the pile from the back yard to the drive way and spred it out to dry up some.

Finished - Compost Bins

And they are about half full, full of horse apples that is! We picked up a truck full, just over a half ton, and with the help of our neighbor Carol, got it mixed in with some shredded leaves etc., it should be ready for this fall's garden applications.

John is making new compost bins for me, three of them so I can sort if I want. Due to severe weather it will have to look like this until tomorrow!
